Code Extraction

With the software available for processing transcriptions it is possible to retrieve all occurences of a chosen code plus the elements contained in the given code. In most cases the contents of the so-called one- and multi-element code types are stretches of actual text. But some codes also contain information added by the transcriber.

An example of the latter is the 2-element "person" code which marks any reference in the source to a historically identifiable person or legendary, mythological or religious figure. The first element of this code contains the name as Wittgenstein wrote it (plus other codes necessary for correct presentation), while the second element contains a transcriber-added reference to the person, which can be used for indexing purposes. Thus, an overview of person names referred to in a particular source manuscript or typescript can easily be produced.
