Transcription Presentation Formats

With the appropriate software tools, the encoded transcriptions of the Wittgenstein Archives may be presented according to a variety of filtering profiles (style sheets). Two such profiles are in regular use at the Archives as an established part of the work process.

Filtering Profiles

Two filtering profiles produce what we call diplomatic and normalised versions of a transcription. These versions serve different purposes with regard to what the user is provided with in each case. The diplomatic version of a transcription will retain as much detail from the original as possible, including deletions, all possible alternatives, page shifts and so on. The normalised version, on the other hand, will provide a 'reading' version of the transcription and will not include deleted elements and precise page shifts.

It should be made clear, however, that these two versions are merely the result of a set of choices made by the Wittgenstein Archives in Bergen regarding what can best serve the needs of the Archives. By redefining the relevant filtering profiles, an uncountable number of other versions may be produced, either similar to or radically different from the Archives' diplomatic and normalised versions.

Available formats

The format in regular use at the Wittgenstein Archives is a FolioViews database of the Archives' transcriptions. This database is available for use by guests at the Archives, providing the user with a wide variety of search and concordance facilities. FolioViews exists in both DOS and Windows versions, both of which are used extensively by the Wittgenstein Archives in Bergen.

Other formats available at the Wittgenstein Archives include Word Perfect and ASCII formats. In the same way as the user can define a different filtering profile in order to produce a different presentation of a transcription, the user may also want to specify his/her own format definition in order to view transcriptions in an alternative format from those mentioned above.
