Årsrapport for 1995 Innhold
For Wittgensteinarkivets
Styre:
6. Gjesteforskere og studenter I 1995 har Wittgensteinarkivet hatt 7 utenlandske gjesteforskere med opphold på tilsammen 10 uker: - Dr. Leszek Koczanowicz, Wroclaw, 07.06.-27.06.95 - Titiana Lana, Milano, 22.06.-30.06.95 - W.L.A van der Bleek, Amsterdam, 31.08.95 - Professor H.E. Mason, Minnesota, 31.08.-13.09.95 - Peter K. Westergaard, København, 16.10.-26.10.95 ERASMUS-student Sascha Djuric
Wittgensteinarkivet fikk 3 nye medarbeidere i forskerstillinger i mai 1995.

Wittgenstein Archives at the University of Bergen Contents
Preface It is a privilege to be associated with the Wittgenstein Archives at the University of Bergen, both because of the remarkable achievements of the project and because of the great people who have made these achievements possible. For six months of 1995, Espen S. Ore stepped in as project director during Claus Huitfeldt’s temporary absence while he functioned as director of the Norwegian Computing Centre for the Humanities. Mr. Ore did a fine job and I would like to repeat here in writing that the Board is very grateful for the manner in which he took on this responsibility and for the manner in which he executed it. The Board is also happy to welcome three new scholars: Franz Hespe, Heinz Wilhelm Krüger, and Angela Requate. Their contributions are very much appreciated. However, 1995 was also a sad year for all at The Wittgenstein Archives. Dr. Peter Philipp resigned from his position as senior lecturer on 1st June and returned to Germany. Shortly thereafter we received the news of his tragic death. He is missed by all his colleagues. In 1995 The Wittgenstein Archives
has depended on the generous support of the Academic Senate and the Faculty
of Arts of the University of Bergen. We hope they will find reason for
satisfaction in this report. The Wittgenstein Archives has also enjoyed
cooperation with other institutions and we look forward to continuing
this cooperation in the future. From the very beginning, The Wittgenstein
Archives has sought close ties with the Wittgenstein Trustees. Their encouragement
and strong moral support has been essential to the success of our work.
For the Board
of the Wittgenstein Archives:
Orm Øverland Chairman of the Board Bergen, April 1996 The Wittgenstein Archives is a research project at the Department of Philosophy at the University of Bergen, with its own budget and Board. Its objective is to produce a machine-readable version of Ludwig Wittgenstein's philosophical writings. In cooperation with the Wittgenstein Trustees and Oxford University Press, The Wittgenstein Archives plans to publish both a facsimile version and transcriptions of the Nachlaß in machine-readable form. Text preparation represented the main activity of The Wittgenstein Archives in 1995. Three new employees joined the project in the course of the year and provided vital additional resources to the work of text preparation. The targets for transcription and proof-reading were more than fulfilled this year. Other activities in 1995 which received attention include the training of new employees, the preparation for publication of transcriptions via electronic network, cooperation with Oxford University Press on the preparation of a prototype of the electronic facsimile, and a presentation of The Wittgenstein Archives at the Wittgenstein Symposium in Kirchberg, Austria. The Wittgenstein Archives is
externally oriented to a high degree, with lectures, publications and
international cooperation. Foreign visiting scholars at The Wittgenstein
Archives contribute to research, lectures and supervision activities.
2. Objectives and Project Plan The Wittgenstein Archives' main objective is to prepare and publish Wittgenstein's Nachlaß in electronic form. The preparation of text is therefore the core activity of the project and steers all other aspects. In the project plan for 1995 five other areas were indicated as high priority: - the training of new employees
The Wittgenstein Archives had the same Board in 1995 as in 1994. Two Board meetings were held on 16.01.95 and 03.11.95. At the Board meeting of 16.01.95, Claus Huitfeldt was given leave of absence in order to function as director of the Norwegian Computing Centre for the Humanities in the period 15.02.-20.08.95. During this period senior executive officer Espen S. Ore from the Norwegian Computing Centre for the Humanities took over the temporary position of leader of The Wittgenstein Archives. The appointment process of new employees took up a considerable amount of the administrative work time in 1995. As of 31.12.95 the correspondence
journal showed 43% of its entries to be project and/or university related,
approximately 5% related to contacts in Norway and 52% to foreign contacts.
Of the latter, 21% involved contact with established cooperative partners.
Apart from the fact that, as in 1994, there was a large amount of internal
university correspondence, the distribution of administrative work corresponded
to previous years. Peter Cripps extended his position from 50 to 80% for the whole of 1995. Franz Hespe, Angela Requate and Heinz Wilhelm Krüger were employed in research positions from 01.05.95, while Peter Philipp resigned from his position as senior lecturer from 01.06.95. Nine people were employed at The Wittgenstein Archives in the period 01.01.-31.12.95: * Peter Cripps, senior executive officer, 80%, 10 work months * Franz Hespe, researcher, 100%, 8 work months (from 01.05.95) * Claus Huitfeldt, associate professor, 100%, 6 work months (project director, leave of absence 15.02.-20.08.95) * Heinz Wilhelm Krüger, researcher, 100%, 8 work months (from 01.05.95) * Espen S. Ore, project leader, 100%, 6 work months (15.02.-20.08.) * Peter Philipp, associate professor, 100%, 5 work months (until 31.05.95) * Alois Pichler, research fellow, 100%, 12 work months * Angela Requate, researcher, 100%, 8 work months (from 01.05.95) * Maria Sollohub, senior
executive officer, 100%, 12 work months This accounts for a total of
75 work months or 6.2 man years, as compared to the planned 6.9 man years.
The distribution of work time was as follows: Of the 1 year of research
time allocated to the academic positions, approximately 0.6 was used.
Thus 5.6 man years went directly towards project work, distributed as
follows: 0.7 man years to internal training, 0.9 man years to external
affairs, 1.2 man years to administration and 2.8 man years to text work.
5.1 The Brenner ArchivesIlse Somavilla at the Brenner Archives at the University of Innsbruck began to transcribe the so-called Koder material 2 according to MECS-WIT. The Wittgenstein Archives received a copy of the transcription towards the end of the year. Somavilla has applied for funding for a research visit to The Wittgenstein Archives during 1996. Both the Brenner Archives and The Wittgenstein Archives were well represented at the Wittgenstein Symposium in Austria in August.
5.2 NOLA (Networking of Literary Archives)The established cooperation links between The Wittgenstein Archives, the Brenner Archives and Oxford Text Archive provided the foundation for a larger EU application (together with other English, Swedish and Austrian cooperative partners). Although the suggested project, NOLA (Networking of Literary Archives) lies outside the core activities of The Wittgenstein Archives, a successful application would be of great significance for both The Wittgenstein Archives and the Norwegian Computing Centre for the Humanities (the coordinating institution for the project). 5.3 The Wittgenstein TrusteesThe Wittgenstein Trustees have been kept informed of the activities of The Wittgenstein Archives throughout 1995. The Trustees had a meeting in Oxford 21.10.95 and a short project report was sent to each of them beforehand. At the meeting the Trustees agreed that The Wittgenstein Archives publish a couple of text samples via electronic network. 5.4 Oxford University Press (OUP)Work with the prototype of the electronic facsimile is behind schedule. It has been decided to return to the original plan of using Photo-CD to produce the images for the facsimile. Images produced by Trinity College Library were sent by OUP to The Wittgenstein Archives in June and a number of these pictures were used during the demonstrations at the Wittgenstein Symposium in Kirchberg in August. A meeting between The Wittgenstein Archives and OUP was held on 08.08.95. A press release from OUP announced the publication date for the facsimile as spring 1997. This was made public during a press conference in Vienna on 11.08.95 and at the Wittgenstein Symposium in Kirchberg (13.-20.08.95). 5.5 Source LibrariesCooperation with the source libraries (Bodleian Library, Trinity College Library, the Austrian National Library and the Bertrand Russell Archives) has previously involved their assistance in consulting original material for proof-reading purposes, the purchase of microfilms, and visits to the libraries by staff members of The Wittgenstein Archives. No such visits were undertaken in 1995. There has however been a continued exchange of Nachlaß information, cataloguing etc. with John Smith at Trinity College Library. In addition, contact was established with the Bertrand Russell Archives at McMasters University in Canada in connection with Michael Biggs' planned publication of typescript no. 201. 5.6 Text Encoding Initiative (TEI)David Barnard from TEI's steering group was in Bergen at the beginning of October to contribute to the planning of NOLA (see 5.2). TEI supports the project and wishes to establish a work group in TEI linked to NOLA. Lou Burnard, one of the editors of the TEI Guidelines, is also leader of the Oxford Text Archive and thus in close contact with both NOLA as a project and The Wittgenstein Archives as an institution. Employees of The Wittgenstein
Archives took part in TEI seminars in Germany and The Netherlands in November
1995 (see 13). 6. Visiting Researchers and Students The Wittgenstein Archives received 7 foreign visiting researchers during 1995, for a total of 10 weeks: - Dr. Leszek Koczanowicz, Wroclaw, 07.06.-27.06.95 - Titiana Lana, Milano, 22.06.-30.06.95 - W.L.A van der Bleek, Amsterdam, 31.08.95 - Professor H.E. Mason, Minnesota, 31.08.-13.09.95 - Peter K. Westergaard, Copenhagen, 16.10.-26.10.95 ERASMUS student Sascha Djuric
from Regensburg was at The Wittgenstein Archives from 01.09.94 until June
1995. 7. Cooperation with other research projects at the University of Bergen The aim of the NAIL project (Norwegian-American Immigrant Letters) is to prepare Norwegian immigrant letters from America for publication in electronic form. A pilot project was carried out in 1994 in which The Wittgenstein Archives' encoding system and software were applied. There was no available capacity to continue with the project in 1995, but applications for the funding of further work in 1996 have been submitted. Work with the encoding of Arabic
texts at the Section for Middle Eastern and Islamic Studies has continued
in 1995. The project is of interest to The Wittgenstein Archives but due
to lack of resources The Archives' project in 1995, but applications for
the funding contribution in 1995 has been limited to consultation. The
project has applied for funding in 1996. 8. System Development and Registration Standard Routine maintenance of the registration standard and MECS software was carried out during 1995. In connection with the Kirchberg
Symposium a considerable amount of work went into developing routines
