: 1 Wenn wir uns fragen; worin besteht der Eindruck, den uns ein Wort macht, so denken wir zuletzt daran das daran an das, was wir sehen, wenn wir das Wort anschauen&p.es; Wir nehmen an das Bild des Wortes selbst sei ziemlich nebensächlich &.und; der Eindruck liege irgendwie hinter dem Wortgestalt Wortbild&p.es; Und diesen Fehler machen wir immer wieder&p.es; Aber die Gestalt eines Wortes, das wir ‐ wie alle Wörter der gewöhnlicher Sprache ‐ unzählige male gesehen haben, macht uns einen tiefen Eindruck&p.es; Denke nur an die Schwierigkeiten, die wir empfinden wenn die Rechtschreibung geändert wird&p.es; Solche Änderungen sind als Sakrileg empfunden worden&p.es; Freilich nur gewisse Zeichen machen uns einen tiefen Eindruck, andere nicht&p.es; Ein neu erfundenes Zeichen etwa &udq.sudq; &vel.dis;&udq.eudq; für oder kann ohne in uns etwas aufzuregen durch ein beliebiges anderes ersetzt werden&p.es; Denke daran daß das geschriebene gesehene Wort uns in ähnlicher Weise vertraut ist wie das gehörte&p.es; Denke an Esperanto &.und; wie seltsam es uns anmutet einen Ausdruck der Herzlichkeit in dieser Kunstsprache übersetzt zu hören&p.es; Wir könnten ja auch nicht der Händedruck willkürlich durch ein anderes Zeichen des Abschieds ersetzen&p.es; Das hängt damit zusammen, daß wir bei der 2 uns das Gefühl der Trauer als etwas hinter den Empfindungen des Weinens, schweren Atmens etc&p.abb; etc&p.abb; vorstellen &.und; diese geneigt sind als etwas Nebensächliches zu vernachlässigen&p.es; ein freundlicher so&udq.eudq;&qm.eis; ‐ Man könnte sagen: durch diesen PStrich wird unsere Erfahrung beim Sehen des Bildes in einer anderen Weise geändert als durch einer &usq.susq;nichtssagenden&usq.eusq; Strich &.und; diese AÄnderung ist ähnlich der welche geschieht wenn durch den Strich die räumliche Erscheinung der Zeichnung geändert wird&p.es; Es ist das Wort &usq.susq;bestimmt&usq.eusq;, welches wir verstehen müssen&p.es; Ich lese etwa eine Reihe gewöhnlicher Sätze &.und; beobachte mich dabei selbst&p.es; selbst Ich merke, ich tue &udq.sudq;etwas ganz bestimmtes&udq.eudq;, d&p.abb;h&p.abb; immer ungefähr das Gleiche&p.es; 5 Es ist, als sagte ich: Wenn ich schreibe tue ich immer ungefähr das Gleiche&p.es; D&p.abb;h&p.abb; ich bewege meine Hand immer in ungefähr der gleichen Weise&p.es; Vergleiche die Familie derssen Sch was man &usq.susq;Schrift Schreiben&usq.eusq; nennt mit der Familie &usq.susq;Lesen&usq.eusq;&p.es; Wir fühlen das Gleichbleiben der Erfahrung&p.es; Vgl&p; Faksimile; Linien am linken und rechten Rand&p; Änderung der Interpunktion verglichen mit einer Änderung der Zeichnung die den Gesichtsausdruck ändert&p.es; Zuerst glaubt man nämlich man rede von einem Gemeinsamen &.und; dann es ist das Ideal dieses anzugeben darzustellen&p.es; Dann aber ist das Feststehende nicht mehr ein Gemeinsames sondern ein Beispiel&p.es; &lp;Sozusagen ein Zentrum der Variationen&p.es;&rp; Die geschriebene Wörter einer mir geläufigen Sprache sind mir wohlbekannte Gesichter&p.es; Und sie zu lesen ist mir sind mir wohlbekannte Erlebnisse&p.es; Wenn ich gefragt würde, was tue ich besonderes wenn ich die Wörter lese, müßte ich sagen: ich sehe sie &.und; spreche sie aus&p.es; Und die Hauptsache des Erlebnisses liegt in der Wohlbekanntheit der Wörter&p.es; Aber diese Wohlbekanntheit ist eine besondere im besondern Fall sie ist z&p.abb;B&p.abb; nicht das Erlebnis der Wohlbekanntheit eines Gesichts &.und; hier gibt es ja auch verschiedene Fälle&p.es; Geläufige Schrift zu lesen ist ein besonderes Erlebnis anders z&p.abb;B&p.abb; als etwas zu Bbuchstabieren oder eine graphische Darstellung ablesen etc&p.abb; 7 &udq.sudq;Ich weiß nicht, das Wort kommt mir auf einmals so fremd vor&udq.eudq;&p.es; ‐ Es ist ganz abgesehen von Lesen eine andere Art des Erlebnisses, wenn der Blick über ihm geläufige Wortbilder gleitet als über fremde&p.es; Was heißt das: &udq.sudq;das Lesen einer uns geläufigen Sprache ist ein ganz besonderes Erlebnis&udq.eudq;&qm.eis; D&p.abb;h&p.abb; wir haben beim lesenden Durchlaufen der Zeilen ein Erl gleichförmiges Erlebnis, &.und; es unterscheidet sich vom dDurchlaufen beliebiger anderer Formenreihen&p.es; Es wäre auch unrichtig zu sagen, daß das Lesen einfach darin bestehe, daß wir Zeichenreihen durchlaufen &.und; uns dabei Laute einfallen&p.es; Denn wenn ich die Reihe 150003 durchlaufe &.und; lasse mir dabei lLaute Einfallen ‐ was ganz leicht ist ‐ so ist das doch kein Lesen&p.es; Es ist anders ob ich &usq.susq;a&usq.eusq; lese &.und; ausspreche, als wenn mir derselben Laut bei &usq.susq;150004&usq.eusq; einfällt&p.es; Und diese Art des Erlebnisses ist charakteristisch für jedes fließende Lesen alles dessen was wir für gewöhnlich &usq.susq;Schrift&usq.eusq; nennen; aber nicht für das &usq.susq;Lesen&usq.eusq; überhaupt&p.es; 8 Vergleiche &usq.susq;Lesen&usq.eusq; &.und; &usq.susq;Bild&usq.eusq;&p.es; Auch in diesem Fall ein eng begrenztes Gebiet an welches wir vorerst denken, dann aber ein Drang der uns in immer weitere Ferne zieht&p.es; Kreise Regel Glied eines Systems&p.es; Eine Regel verstehen heißt manchmal das System verstehen&p.es; Was aber heißt das&qm.eis; 150005 In welchem Falle sagen wir es verstehe Jemand das System dieser Befehle&qm.eis; Er reagiert auf Glieder des Systems in bestimmter Weise; er kann das System erklären&p.es; Wie tut er das&qm.eis; &udq.sudq;Es ist eine Einstellung sich dem Befehl wie er auch lLaute mag hingeben&usq.eusq;&p.es; Beispiel des sich leiten lassens Sich÷leiten÷lassens&p.es; Die Hand leiten lassen&p.es; Maschine&p.es; Betrachte einen allgemeinen Satz, wie &udq.sudq;die Regel leitet uns, wenn sie das Glied 9 eines Systems ist&udq.eudq;&em.ees; Was sind die Beispiele dafür&qm.eis; Wie gehen sie in die Umgebung über&qm.eis; Vgl&p; Faksimile; Abschnitt überschreibt eine ‐ gelöschte ‐ Zeichnung&p; Man könnte sagen Wenn wir die gewöhnliche Schrift lesen geschieht immer ein &.und; dasselbe &.und; man könnte sagen: beobachte doch was geschieht &.und; Du wirst sehen worin das Lesen besteht&p.es; Du hast sozusagen sZeit genug um es zu beobachten&p.es; Nun was sehe ich da&qm.eis; &lp;Da ist etwas interessant: daß man nicht im Stande ist ein uns gel geschriebenes oder gedrucktes Wort anzusehen ohne es zu lesen&p.es;&rp; Ich gehe mit meinem Blick der Zeile entlang &.und; schon das geschieht nicht so wie wenn ich ihn einer beliebiger Reihe von Bildern entlang führe &lp;ich redeVgl&p; Faksimile; Pfeil&p; hier nicht von dem was experimentell durch Darstellung der Augenbewegung festgestellt werden kann&rp;,&p.es; dDer , der &p.es; Der Blick gleitet möchte könnte man sagen besonders Rreibungslos &.und; doch nicht flüchtig widerstandslos ohne hängen zu bleiben &.und; doch rutscht er nicht &lp;die Wohlbekanntheit der Wortgestalten, ‐ anders wieder wenn man von rechts nach links liest&rp;&p.es; Dabei geht ein ganz unwillkürliches &usq.susq;Sprechen in der Vorstellung&usq.eusq; vor sich&p.es; Und so verhält es sich wenn ich deutsch, englisch, franz&p.abb;, &.und; gedruckt, 10 geschrieben in lat&p.abb; Schrift oder gothischer Schrift lese&p.es; Was aber von dem allem ist für das Lesen als solches wesentlich&qm.eis; Nicht ein Zug der in allen Fällen von Lesen vorkoämmeen&p.es; müßte&p.es; vorkommen müßte&p.es; vorkäme&p.es; Verstehen Bedeutung Denken Erwarten Wünschen Fürchten Glauben Überzeugung 11 A &udq.sudq;Warum nennst Du diese beiden Farben &usq.susq;rot&usq.eusq;&qm.eis;&udq.eudq; ‐ B &udq.sudq;B Weil eine gewisse Ähnlichkeit zwischen ihnen besteht&p.es;&udq.eudq; A: &udq.sudq;Ach darum&em.ees;&udq.eudq; Was heißt es &udq.sudq;diese beiden Farben sind ähnlich&udq.eudq;; ‐ wie gebraucht man diesen Ausdruck&qm.eis; &udq.sudq;Die beiden Farben haben ein Element gemeinsam &.und; das nenne ich &usq.susq;rot&usq.eusq;&udq.eudq;&p.es; A &udq.sudq;Diese beiden Farben sind doch sehr ähnlich&udq.eudq;&p.es; B: &udq.sudq;Ich finde sie sehr verschieden&udq.eudq;&p.es; A: &udq.sudq;Ach darum&em.ees;&udq.eudq; Warum nennt man das Suchen im Gedächtnis ein &usq.susq;Suchen&usq.eusq;&qm.eis; Warum nennt man eine Stimmung &udq.sudq;trübe&udq.eudq;&qm.eis; Wie wenn man sagt, &udq.sudq;weil beide das Wetter &.und; die Stimmung uns denselben Eindruck machen&udq.eudq;&qm.eis; Ist es nicht bBesteht die Gleichheit des Eindrucks nicht zum Teil gerade darin daß wir geneigt sind in beiden Fällen das gleiche Wort &.und; in ähnlichen Verbindungen zu gebrauchen&qm.eis; Auch darin daß wir das Wort im gleichen Ton sagen&p.es; 12 &udq.sudq;Ach Sie sind&app.contr;s&em.ees;&udq.eudq; &lp;Die Problematik der Philosophie ist die Problematik des Witzes&p.es;&rp; Wie ist es wenn sich uns ein Vergleich aufdrängt&qm.eis; Etwa der des &usq.susq;Suchens&usq.eusq; im Gedächtnis&p.es; Das Wort &usq.susq;gleichsam&usq.eusq;&p.es; &udq.sudq;Er schaut gleichsam trübe aus&udq.eudq;&p.es; &usq.susq;schwarz&usq.eusq; rede, so gebrauchen wir das Wort in verschiedener Bedeutung&p.es;&udq.eudq; ‐ Was ist das Kriterium für den Gebrauch in versch&p.abb; Bedeutung&qm.eis; Wie würde ich die eine Bedeutung von der andern absondern&qm.eis; Oder auch: Wie weißt Du das&qm.eis; oder besteht der Gebrauch in versch&p.abb; Bed&p.es; eben darin&qm.eis; Was willst Du sagen&qm.eis; Ich würde nun als Erklärung vVerschiedenheiten der beiden Spiele aufzählen hervorheben&p.es; In der einen z&p.abb;B&p.abb; legt man etwas Schwarzes an das andere um zu sehen ob die beiden 14 gleich sind im andern Spiel ist dies nicht der Fall&p.es; Es heißt also mein Satz: Wenn Du das Wort &usq.susq;schwarz&usq.eusq; in beiden vVerbindungen gebrauchst so kann ich Dich auf andere Verschiedenheiten in der beiden Spielen aufmerksam machen&p.es; Darauf aber gäbe es keine Antwort, wenn nun jemand sagte &udq.sudq;aber ich nenne, was Du zwei Spiele nennst, ein Spiel&udq.eudq;&p.es; &udq.sudq;&udq.sudq;But Wwhy &udq.sudq;Why &udq.sudq;But why do you call speak both of physical &.and; mental &usq.susq;strain&usq.eusq;&qm.eis;&udq.eudq; ‐ &udq.sudq;Because they have a certain similarity, they have a common element&p.es;&udq.eudq; Whatt is this common element&qm.eis; can you point to it as you pointed in&sp.ses;&qm.eis; Can you say anything more about it than that it is the element of strain&qm.eis; If not, it was no explanation to say &udq.sudq;It is a certain tentsion&p.es;&udq.eudq; That doesn&app.contr;t get us any further, for why do you talk of tension in these different cases&p.es; &udq.sudq;A certain feeling of tentsion accompanyies is part of both experiences&udq.eudq;&p.es; Are you not just translating what you said before, into other language 15 or are you actually referrring to an experience like that of feeling your heart beat&p.es;, Thus I could as you could &p.es; Thus I could , as you could say that this feeling accom is a constituent both of certain sensations of fear &.and; of hopes joy&p.es; &udq.sudq;But why should we call both experiences a strain if there was no similarity between them&qm.eis;&udq.eudq; But cann&app.contr;t the similarity just consist in this that you feel are inclined to use in both cases the same metaphor, the same expression&p.es; And we are not only inclined to use the phrase a deep sorrow &.and; a deep well but very often to accompany both by the same gestures &.and; to say them in the same tone of voice&p.es; &udq.sudq;There is something in common between the two experiences only I don&app.contr;t know what&udq.eudq;&p.es; Well this too characterizes your experience &.and; when I should say when you&app.contr;ll say that you know what is in common between them your experience will be different&p.es; To say that you use the same word &usq.susq;strain&usq.eusq; in all the different cases because of a similarity is all right if you wish to distinguish 16 this case from the case of the word &usq.susq;bank&usq.eusq;&p.es; The riverbank river bank &.and; the moneybank money bank are not so called because of any similarity&p.es; &udq.sudq;But isn&app.contr;t there a particular experience of similarity which you have when you compare physical &.and; mental strain; just the experience you don&app.contr;t have when you compare a riverbank river bank &.and; a moneybank money bank&qm.eis;&udq.eudq; But do you also experience a similarity between this similarity other similarities&qm.eis; For what makes you call this a similarity &lp;if you think there allways must be something to make you call a thing what you call it&rp;&p.es; Concsider uses of the word similar: We say these two pieces of paper have similar colour if it is difficult for us to distinguish them to say which of them is darker&p.es; Now compare the ex experience of difficulty to say which is darker with thate experience of similarity that the experience of similarity when it is impossible not to distinguish them but when I say I like my trousers &.and; jacket to have similar colours so as not to have too strong a contrast&p.es; 17 &udq.sudq;The feeling of Ffamiliarity &udq.sudq;Familiarity &udq.sudq;The feeling of familiarity ist a feeling of at÷homeness&p.es;&udq.eudq; 18 Nor is it true that should we say that whenever we feel a strain all the experiences of strain have a common element&qm.eis; &usq.susq;Perhaps we had better say that they are all similar in some respect similar&p.es;&usq.eusq; Do you mean there must be a common element, or there actually is one&p.es; If the latter, what makes you say &usq.susq;there is a common element&usq.eusq;&qm.eis; &udq.sudq; There seems to be a difference between this case &.and; that when we say &udq.sudq;well, we call this colour &usq.susq;red&usq.eusq; because it is red&p.es;&udq.eudq; I&p.abb;e&p.abb; we seem to use the word &usq.susq;strain&usq.eusq; here in a derivative sense, as opposed to a direct sense&p.es;
