Wittgenstein’s Externalism – Getting Semantic Externalism through the Private Language Argument and the Rule-Following Considerations

Cristina Borgoni

Abstract

It is widely accepted that Wittgenstein’s position in Philosophical Investigations is
in great agreement with semantic externalism. However, the way his position is
related to it is neither explicit nor is itself a standard reference. The aim of this
work is to show that the Private Language Argument and the Rule-Following
considerations are sufficient arguments to defend an externalist position. Two routes
will be offered that will lead us from those arguments to externalism.
