Ludwig Wittgenstein, Culture and Value: A List of Source Manuscripts
Table of contents

Introduction
In 1977, Georg Henrik von Wright, in collaboration with Heikki Nyman, published a selection of remarks about philosophy, art and culture collected from a number of the manuscripts which Wittgenstein left behind when he died in 1951. A new edition of these remarks, called "Vermischte Bemerkungen" ("mixed remarks"), was published in 1978, with some additional material (reprinted in Wittgenstein 1984). This edition was translated into English by Peter Winch and published under the title of "Culture and Value" (Wittgenstein 1980).
In the following pages, the origins of these remarks in Wittgenstein's manuscripts are listed. The list has been compiled on the basis of von Wright's catalogue of the material left by Wittgenstein (von Wright 1982) and the copies of the Cornell microfilm in the Wittgenstein Archives at the University of Bergen1-en. Georg Henrik von Wright and Heikki Nyman provided me with references to source manuscripts for most of the remarks.
For each remark the list indicates its number, the source manuscript, the page on which the remark begins, and the date on which it was probably written.
Using the Wittgenstein 1984 edition, for ease of reference, I have numbered the remarks from 1 to 4862-en. The first two words of each remark are also quoted (both in German, referring to Wittgenstein 1984, and in English, referring to the corresponding remark in Wittgenstein 1980).
For each remark, the source manuscript is indicated under the heading [Manuscript], with the number referring to von Wright's catalogue.
Under the heading [Page] or [Crn Page] the page on which the remark begins is indicated. Wittgenstein did not paginate all his manuscripts. In order to make references to unpaginated manuscripts, I use the pagination made at the Wittgenstein Archives at the University of Bergen on the Cornell copies.3-en Page references of this kind will be found in the column [Crn Page]; references to page numbers in the original will be found in the column [Page].
A remark which is written in code is marked by placing a c, "code", following the page number. If parts of the remark are written in code, it is marked by placing pc, "partly in code".
Under the heading [Date], is given the date on which Wittgenstein wrote the remark, which provided the basis for the subsequent publication. Since Wittgenstein formulated and reformulated some of these remarks several times, as he did with his philosophical texts, my datings do not always give the date on which Wittgenstein wrote the first version. I have used the following indications of dates: (1) <Date>, on date mentioned; (2) [<Date>, on this date, or later in the same year; (3) ]<Date>, earlier than this date, in the same year; (4) <Date>-<Date>, between these dates. (1) corresponds either to the last-mentioned date in the same manuscript, insofar as this corresponds to the probable date of composition; or, in the case of undated manuscripts or manuscripts whose date of composition is problematic, to the date given in von Wright's catalogue; (2) corresponds to the last-mentioned date; (3) corresponds to the next-mentioned date; (4) corresponds either to the period of time between the last-mentioned and the next-mentioned date; or, in the case of undated manuscripts or manuscripts whose date of composition is problematic, to the date given in von Wright's catalogue.
An example: The remark "We are struggling with language./ We are engaged in a struggle with language." which has been given the number 55 is taken from manuscript 153a which was not paginated by Wittgenstein. This remark starts on Cornell page 70 and was written in 1931, on or after May 10.
I thank Georg Henrik von Wright and Heikki Nyman for their generosity and help. Not only did they encourage me to produce this list, they also provided me with their own material on its subject matter. I am thankful to Josef Rothhaupt for helpful criticism. I am also indebted to Claus Huitfeldt, the Director of the Wittgenstein Archives at the University of Bergen, for his support of my work.
